At High Meadow Community School, we are proud to implement the 5-Part Mastery Flow Model to enhance our mathematics instruction. This structured approach ensures that our children develop a deep and comprehensive understanding of mathematical concepts, fostering their confidence and competence in problem-solving.

The 5 Stages of the Mastery Flow Model:

  1. Representation
    • In this initial stage, we introduce mathematical concepts using various representations, such as visual aids, manipulatives, and diagrams. This helps children grasp abstract ideas by connecting them to concrete examples.
  2. Fluency
    • Once children understand the representations, we focus on building fluency. This involves practising essential mathematical skills and processes, enabling children to perform calculations accurately and efficiently.
  3. Problem Solving
    • In this stage, children apply their knowledge and skills to solve a range of problems. We encourage them to think critically and creatively, using their understanding of mathematics to tackle real-life challenges.
  4. Further Extension
    • Here, we provide opportunities for children to deepen their understanding by exploring more complex concepts and relationships. This stage allows them to make connections between different areas of mathematics and enhances their analytical skills.
  5. Rich Tasks
    • Finally, we engage our children with rich tasks that challenge their thinking and encourage collaboration. These tasks require them to apply their learning in innovative ways, promoting a love for mathematics and a desire to explore further.

In addition to the Mastery Flow Model, we advocate the use of Times Tables Rock Stars and Numbots. These engaging platforms provide children with the opportunity to become fully secure in their number bonds and times table knowledge, which is vital for success in all areas of mathematics. By integrating these resources into our curriculum, we ensure that our children not only learn mathematical concepts but also develop a passion for learning and a strong foundation for future studies.
